Welegedara, 28, made his debut against England in 2007 but lost his place after suffering problems with his run-up.

1st ODI: Zimbabwe beat Bangladesh by 5 wickets

Elton Chigumbura hit an undefeated half-century and took three wickets on Tuesday to lead Zimbabwe to a five-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first of five limited-overs internationals.

After claiming 3-27 from eight overs to help dismiss Bangladesh for 186, Chigumbura hit 60 in a stand of 99 with Stuart Matsikenyeri (47) to steer Zimbabwe to victory with more than 15 overs to spare at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Chigumbura hit nine boundaries and a six in 50 balls.

Abdur Razzak briefly gave Bangladesh hope by taking 3-0 in five balls for Zimbabwe to fall to 39-3 in the eighth over. The spinner had Justice Chibhabha (26) and Brendan Taylor out lbw in successive balls, and then bowled Tatenda Taibu for a duck.

Hamilton Masakadza was out for 10, caught by Raqibul Hassan at backward point off Rubel Hossain to make it 54-4 in the 13th over. Eight overs later, Coventry was caught for 32 by Razzak at deep midwicket off Dollar Mahmud for 90-5.

Razzak took 3-36, while Hossain and Mahmud picked up one wicket each.

Earlier, Bangladesh's Mushfiqur Rahim hit a half-century after Zimbabwe captain Prosper Utseya won the toss and sent the hosts in to bat.

Rahim made 56 from 78 balls with five fours and received support from lower-order batsman Mahmud, who smashed 41 off 30, including three sixes and four boundaries.

Rahim and Mahmud put on 54 runs for the ninth wicket before Bangladesh was dismissed with more than three overs to spare.

Chigumbura removed openers Junaid Siddique for 0 and Tamim Iqbal for 5 to reduce Bangladesh to 5-2 in the fourth over. He followed up 11 overs later to dismiss Mohammad Ashraful for 20.

Chamu Chibhabha claimed 2-28 and Kyle Jarvis 2-43, while Ray Price and Graeme Cremer each claimed one wicket.

Gavaskar too feels Dhoni should bat higher in the order

Mumbai: Batting great Sunil Gavaskar on Tuesday joined the list of former players who believe India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni should bat higher in the order.

Echoing the opinions of former India captain Sourav Ganguly and retired Australian stumper Adam Gilchrist, Gavaskar said, "Those who are good players should always get most of the overs, especially during a run chase when the required rate is above five runs an over. The team management has to think over it.''

Dhoni rules out possibility of batting up the order

"This is the reason why Sachin Tendulkar was promoted as an opener so that he gets all the 50 overs to play," Gavaskar told reporters.

On the criticism of Harbhajan Singh, who disappointed with the ball in the first ODI against Australia, the legendary opener said the off-spinner would bounce back.

"He is not the only bowler to get hit. He is a class bowler and will bounce back," Gavaskar said.

On India's poor fielding, Gavaskar blamed the outfield at the Indian grounds and the junior level coaches for it.

"The outfields in India are so tough that they do not encourage diving and sliding. Besides, it is the responsibility of the junior level coaches to teach the cricketers this aspect of the game. It is difficult for them to learn these things once they grow up," he said.

Ponting hails 'incredible' Tendulkar

Centurion: Only the third batsman to amass 12,000 runs in ODIs, Australian skipper Ricky Ponting says he is chasing the benchmarks set by veteran Indian Sachin Tendulkar.

Ponting, after scoring a match-winning unbeaten 111 against England on Friday night to take Australia to their second successive Champions Trophy final, paid tribute to Tendulkar, who will complete 20 years in international cricket this November.

"The number of innings' of his, I have been able to sit back and watch, I think he is an amazing player. Look at his stats and records and it's quite incredible for someone to have stayed in the game for 20 years," Ponting said.

Ponting third batsman to pass 12,000 ODI runs

"He has set benchmarks for guys like me to chase him and get as close as we can. If I had to last 20 years, I would probably be batting in a wheelchair," he quipped.

Ponting is the first Australian and the third overall, after Tendulkar and Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya, to score 12,000 runs in ODIs.

Tendulkar and Ponting, in fact, are the two biggest run-getters in contemporary cricket.

Tendulkar has played 159 Tests and scored 12773 runs with 42 centuries and 53 half centuries at an average of 54.58 runs. In ODIs, he has turned out in 430 matches so far and scored 16903 runs with 44 hundreds and 91 fifties, averaging 44.48.

Ponting, on the other hand, has played 136 Tests and scored 11345 runs with 38 centuries and 48 half centuries, averaging 55.88. In ODIs, he has appeared in 323 matches, scored 12043 runs and hit 28 centuries and 70 fifties, averaging 43.32.

Both Tendulkar and Ponting no longer play Twenty20 internationals for their countries.

"It (scoring 12000 ODI runs) is a nice achievement, but I had no idea before the game how many runs I had scored. I hit runs for my country and when my career is over, I can reflect on the successes," Ponting said.

After Friday's win, Ponting lauded the younger members of his team for contributing to his side's unbeaten run in the ongoing event.

"We have made it to the final with relatively young guys. Michael Clarke is missing and so is Nathan Bracken. We are peaking at the right time for the final," said Ponting, who shared a 252-run stand with Shane Watson (136).

In the last five years, Australia has won every big ICC trophy except the Twenty20 World Cup.

Ponting said he takes pride in the side's performance.

"The key, I think, is the mix we bring of youth and experience. When senior guys take responsibility, it allows younger guys to learn and find feet at international level," he said.

"We are playing at a level which would win us the big games. We look to play best cricket when it matters," Ponting added.

Ponting's own form has won him all-around admiration and the right-hander credited it to the brief break he took after the Ashes debacle this summer.

"I took 10-12 days break after the England tour, and since I have returned I feel I am batting really well. I am able to achieve a lot of control in the middle."

He rated the wicket used in Friday's semi-final as the best by far in this tournament.

Man of the Match Watson, meanwhile, praised his skipper for the role he played in the middle.

"Ricky helped me a lot. In the middle period, when I was finding my feet against slower bowlers, his presence was very useful," he said.

"Previously, I used to get overawed in big games. I am happy now that I was able to put together a big effort today, especially with the bat," he added.
